Although
we windsurfed in Cabo, the following information would
be useful to kiteboarders as well.
Our
first "official" kiteboarding vacation was
to Hotel Cabo San Lucas which was located on a private
cliff outside of the city. The hotel was beautiful and
the food was exquisite. Fresh fish was abundant and
the fresh salsa was to die for.
We
chose this hotel because their brochure advertised windsurfing
rental gear and lessons. They even had a advertisement
at the front desk to sign up for lessons.
Our
first morning, we ran down to the beach with excitement
to begin our windsurfing adventure. We found the beach
hut and told them we wanted to rent gear. The guy said,
"I think we have a board around here". He
finally dragged out a broken board and a torn sail,
then said, "Well I guess this won't work".
At
first we were pissed, then we got a lesson in relaxation.
There was absolutely nothing else to do there but relax
in lounge chairs or hammocks and drink margaritas. When
we returned home, we realized that it was the most relaxing
vacation we had ever been on.
Cabo
San Lucas taught us a valuable lesson. First, check
out the facilities, the wind expected at that time of
year and the equipment possibilities before you book
the vacation. Secondly, if you run into an unexpected
problem, be open to doing other things. When there is
no wind, we go kayaking, snorkeling, diving, swimming,
biking, hiking, site-seeing, or whatever else there
is to do. The important thing is to go with the flow
and enjoy yourself.
